Kate Swaine

BA Hons Dip ION FdSc mBANT

I studied nutritional therapy for over 3 years at Patrick Holford’s Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London, graduating in 2007 with a Dip ION.   Since then, I have worked with individuals, run cooking classes, wellness retreats and weight management groups.  I frequently present at both corporate and community level and have been interviewed on BBC radio and television.

As ongoing CPD I am completing full certification with the Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) in the US and in 2017 completed the programme AFMCP (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice)  in London.

To date, I have completed  all 6 of the IFM Advanced Practice Modules in Gastrointestinal Health,  Immune System, Cardiovascular Health and Metabolism, Hormone Health and Detoxification. My final exams are looming (2022).

My passions are gut health and hormones.

Kate’s professional attitude and thorough knowledge of her subject gave me confidence and I was pleased she involved me in the action plan and decisions based on the supplements and changes to my diet and lifestyle that she felt would be of benefit. None of these was particularly difficult to incorporate into my daily life.

I have recommended Kate to many friends and family and would continue to do so. Having suffered from digestive and sleep problems for my entire adult life, and trying everything I could think of to deal with them, I decided that I wanted to try to manage my health through diet and lifestyle rather than medication.

How I got into Nutritional Therapy

Aiming to help others improve and manage health conditions

My interest in nutritional therapy really began in 1998 when my mother had cancer and we were recommended the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Centre in Bristol.

We got lots of nutrition advice, recipes and practical meal ideas.  I was preparing her meals, reading articles on nutrients and a seed was sown that would change the path of my working life.

While I was studying nutrition (and working full time!) I had my own health problems that involved dehabilitating physical pain.  Conventional medicine offered me pain management therapy and pain-numbing medication.  This didn’t seem like a long-term solution.

I carried out certain functional tests on myself:  my gut was a mess, my nutrient status was awful despite my healthy diet, and various hormones were way out of range.  I was my own case study!  To cut a long story short – I got fully better over about 18 months, something I was originally advised might never happen.

I’m a former club swimmer and runner – injury has stopped the latter.

In 2018 my big challenge was swimming Lake Windermere, a distance of 11 miles (or 17.6kms).  In 2019 I swam across the Bosphorus in Turkey (Asia to Europe!) and various other events in the UK.    I also coach swimming with a local triathlon club.

If I’m not in the water, I can often be found wandering in the hills and through the glens of Scotland.
